Language and the Global Economy:

The need for speaking multiple languages rises as our global economy becomes more interconnected. Those once isolated or demonized, are now trading partners. The internet has knocked down many of the communication barriers.

In the United States, Spanish is almost as commonplace as English. Many jobs now require speaking more than one language, or speaking additional labguages gives the job seeker a competitive edge in the hiring process.

Those who are able to view the global landscape can anticipate where the next valuable language skills will be. As the Soviet Union crumbled and markets opened, people with Russian language skills found themselves in high demand and were able to leverage that skill into higher salaries.

Today, looking at the global economy and emerging markets would lead one to believe that languages like Chinese, Indonesian, and Croatian may present opportunities. Whether for work or pleasure, learning a language can open doors that would otherwise remain closed.

Regardless of your motivation to learn another language, it can be a rewarding endeavor. Being able to communicate with people in their native language is a quick way to create lasting friendships and business partnerships. As the internet continues to reach ever more remote locations, access to news and information in other languages becomes easier to find.
